Do we have to know like every single detail?? Like how many ppl died in each battle and how many planes or boats were lost... cause I was just focusing on the fact that if they lost a lot of men or a little... or if we won or not... or how hard it was... I already told you the Bible section. The Alicia chronology is easy to reproduced by skimming your reading comp questions. Lastly, Alicia survived after the war on money she received from Russian soldiers and by selling clothing and by living with the Sharfs. Once she joined Brecha they helped care for her. In Palestine she survived by joining the Israeli army. She is an amazingly resourceful young woman!!!

Taking the Test if You were Absent Today

Dear Ailing Classmates:

If you can take the unit test tomorrow that is great. If you are still too sick you can take the WWII part Wed during school and take the Alicia part home as a take home Wed afternoon or evening. If you are too sick to take the tests Tuesday and Wednesday I will work with your parents to arrange a time for you to take it at home. I know you don't want to miss our celebrations Thursday and Friday. If you are up to it it will be good to get the tests out of the way. Don't overdo it though! We have to say on the test if WWII was a just war... well a just war on the allies' part or axis'? Because for some things the allies' choices were just and the axis' not and vice versa.

Alicia Review

For Alicia you will have a word bank of the Hebrew vocabulary we studied that you need to match to their definitions. These are the words like Rosh Hashannah and Shiva.

You will have a separate word bank with vocab words that are starred on your vocab list. Some words you will match to definitions and some words you will need to be able to use in a sentence. You will have a list of words to choose from for the sentences.

There is a chronology section in which you will have to put events from the book in the correct chronological order.

There are only 10 reading comp questions that deal with the most important ideas like what was the steps the Nazis took to systematically exterminate the Jews of Europe.

Lastly, you will have two essays to pick from.
1)Describe Alicia's character. Give examples that display her character qualities. How did these qualities enable her to survive the holocaust.
2) Describe the principles necessary for a war to be considered just. Discuss whether the Axis powers were justified in starting WWII. Then discuss whether the Allies were justified in the way they fought in return.

What's on the Test Tomorrow

Bible:

In addition to your study guide be able to describe the crowd Jesus spoke to (had been sick, demon possessed, etc) but he healed them. They were poor and desperate people from all over Israel and Palestine. Know what blessed and righteous mean and be able to summarize the beatitudes.

Logic:

Know the difference between deductive and inductive logic and Mr. Donohue's 3 arguments for the existence of God, the three questions people ask when they suffer, and the 3 answers Jesus gives for suffering. Also, how can these three statements all be true: God is good, God is in control, and bad things happen.

Martha, the crowd was still poor after Jesus healed them. But the key to their blessing was that they sought out Jesus and wanted the kingdom he offered. The point is not whether you are rich or poor, sick or healthy but whether or not you have the kingdom of Heaven which is Jesus Himself.

You guys also need to know the Shema in English!!! Also that Jews worshipped at the Tabernacle with Moses then the Temple with Solomon and when that was destroyed in synagogues like the one we visited.

Alicia Summary Chapters 20-25 and Epilogue

Chapter 20 (May 1945):

Alicia heads to Lvov with Rivka by train. While in Lvov they miss their train getting tea and then head to Bielsko on a Russian truck with no possessions. There they are taken in by the Sharfs because they are also Jewish. Alicia meets two orphans from the concentration camp and decides to set up an orphanage and takes in 24 orphans aged 10-15. She is only 15 herself but 5'6" and very mature for her age.

Chapter 21 (June 1945):

Alicia is taken to Lodz to meet Tzivia who runs the Brecha, an organization which smuggles Jewish refuggees out of Europe to Palestine (Eretz Israel). Life is still dangerous for Jews in Europe as some Poles and other ethnic groups commit pogroms against Jews to eliminate the evidence of their cooperating with the Germans.

Chapter 22 (Summer 1945):

Alicia agrees to join Brecha when they promise to take care of her orphans. She leads four "transports" of Jews out of Eastern Europe. On the 4th transport she gives up her $8,000 to get to America and suffers terrible pain from where the SS officer kicked her.

Chapter 23 (Sept 1945):

Alicia is sent to a United Nations Displaced Person's Camp in the Austrian Alps to recover.

Chapter 24 (Summer 1946-Spring 1947):

Alicia is sent to school in Belgium. She has the opportunity to go to America but now thinks of Eretz Israel as her home.

Chapter 25 (March 1947)

Alicia gets on a ship to Palestine which is controlled by the British. She is stopped by the British and taken to a prisoner camp on the island of Cyprus. The British do not want more Jews coming to Palestine stirring up trouble with the Arab Palestinians.

Epilogue Alicia spends 8 months on Cyprus. In 1948 the United Nations voted to divide Palestine into two countries: Israel for the Jews and Palestine for the Arabs. Alicia goes to Israel and joins the Israeli freedom fighters. She meets her husband and goes by the name Ada to forget her painful past. In 1950 they get married and in 1952 they move to America. Her first son is a miracle and is born in 1959.

Unit Test Review for our Absent Classmates!!!

We missed you today! Personally I am glad there were 5 less water balloons headed my direction but am sorry you missed the wrap up to WWII and our review.

Here is what you missed:

FDR's death shaking the nation in April 1945
Eisenhower choosing to let Stalin take Berlin
Germany's surrender May 8th
The bloody battle to take Okinawa in which 92,000 Japanese soldiers and 100,000 Jap civilians died fighting to the death. The US lost 16,000 men. This convinced the US that the Japanese would defend their home islands to the death. They had an army of 6.5 million plus they armed their civilians to resist an Allied invasion. US planners estimated that 500,000 Americans and 6 million Japanese would die if the US invaded Japan.
As a result President Truman chose to drop two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing 500,000 Japanese over a 5 year period due to the radiation. Emperor Hirohito finally agreed to surrender after the 2nd bomb thinking we may have more (which we didn't) and the treaty was signed on Sept 2nd, 1945.

Once we finished the war we finished Alicia. The summary of the last 6 chapters will be my next post.

The Unit Test Part A on Tuesday will be on the Bible, Logic, Ethics, and Alicia. Part B on Wednesday will cover WWII. Mr. B

ok... I was looking at my dates... and it says that on July 10, 1940 the Battle of Britain began... and that was when like Germany bombed them day after day after day after day after day after day sry... but then it says that on September of 1940 (2 months later) that Germany begins all out Blitz on Britain... CONFUSED!!! Can anyone explain that?? Or does anyone understand that??

Oral Presentations

I hope all our shadowers had good days today. We had a great relaxed day at Cambridge catching up on unfinished work.

For those of you who weren't with us remember the goal in your presentations is to give us a good sense of why your character was significant to WWII. Any background you can give us is great but remember the presentation should only be 4-5 minutes so you have to pick what you share about yourself carefully.

Several of you want to do power points. If you do remember that you are being graded on the rubric I gave you for oral presentations. The power point should support a strong oral presentation on your part which includes how you speak, how you stand, and what you do with your own body and voice to make the presentation interesting. Do not rely on your powerpoint to be the presentation. It is a tool just like a story board to support what you present. We are interested in you the WWII figure!

The handout you gave me today and the NAS version that you gave us don't quite match up like there is a little bit of different wording. And I was wondering which wording you will be looking for. Also I know that you were considering giving us the same handout that you gave us today tomorrow to lessen the time and what not. Have you made a decision? And how accurate does out grammar and spelling have to be? Also for the comprehension questions you mentioned will they be on the quiz? And if so, what is the general topic and have we gone over the answer? If the question was about the verses you mentioned with verses 3 and 10 I am not sure I understood your meaning. Because the direction that I'm pretty sure that you were heading in is not the same theme that I had in mind. And when you said the whole drawing a picture thing was that a joke? If not, then does it have to be about the meaning that you think or is it about our meaning? Also how well would you expect the drawing (assuming there is one although I thought that you were joking.... or at least I hoped!). I think I asked most of my questions for now!

I have I problem. I've been given the curse of writing WAY to much for reports and biographies. I finished my rough draft and it's 3 pages and a 1/4 a page. And there's more.... that's in 1.5 spacing. Double Spaced it's like 4 pages and 1/4. My dad is reading it to take out some of the unimportant details, but it's SO HARD!!! How do I cut it down? And MacArthur did so much... in the book I read, it said in the 50 years he served, he has the more accomplishments than any other general! And ugh... Can you help me?

I don't know anyone in my family that was in World War II. I called my grandpa and the only people that were in WWII died. I have 1 person, my Uncle Boy (technically great uncle)but he's in the hospital and lost his memory, well a lot of it. So what do I do? Hitler Speech??

I am not gonna lie I am a little bit stressed about this Hitler speech.... I practiced A LOT but it really isn't good and i don't feel good about it and I don't know what to do and I have lots of questions so here are a few...... I am not sure that I fully understand what the requirements are for the Hitler speech resiting or whatever you want to call it. I mean I understand that you don't want us to make fun of Hitler and I understand that you will be grading it but I don't understand how we are exactly supposed to say it with the same inspiring and captivating way that Hitler used to almost enchant his audience. And I also don't understand how you said that you don't want it to seem like we are reading it..... I mean I understand that Hitler had notes and sometimes nonchalantly looked down but i don't think that I will be able to do I like that because I didn't write that speech and I don't quite understand what he is telling his listeners during my part which makes it difficult not to read it and you said that we have to say it word for word but that we dont have to memorize it and we cant look down at the paper so I don't think that I quite understand how that adds up... Also I don't really know what emotion to give off..... also are we allowed to use hand motions I am pretty sure that we aren't but I'm just checking because if we are trying to act like Hitler during his speeches then they are pretty mandatory...... Also I am not sure what tone of voice to use.... And finally (for now) how good do you expect/want this to be?????????????

Prayer Request

Hey guys.... I had a prayer request. My neighbor's dog died yesterday and so I was wondering if you guys could pray for the Forresters (my neighbor) and for me. I know this sounds weird but I was REALLY close to Toby (the dog) and I've known him my whole life. Cause he was 14 and I'm only 13. He was like a 2nd dog to me, and so I'm really sad right now. Movie!

Ok, I saw this movie trailer and the movie was called "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and it was about like a little boy's father becoming a soldier for Germany so they have to move and then the little boy explores in his new back yard and finds a consantration camp :( and he sees another little boy and they find out that they are the same age and then the one little boy not in the consantration camp is like why are you wearing pajamas and then the other little boy was like cause the soldiers took all our clothes then the little boy with a soldier father is like well my father is a soldeir but he doesnt take clothes then the little boys become friends and then a bunch of stuff happens and im pretty sure that the one boy is killed but thats a guess and also the little boy whose father is a soldier is for Germany meaning that he does take the clothes.......... the bottom line is that it goes along with our unit and seems like it would be worth us going to see as a class so i think that we should have a field trip to go see it cause its out now in theaters!

u know how there are all these techniques for music and poetry? like voices, mode, instruments, etc tempo for music and rhyme pattern and stuff for poetry? do we need to have every single kind of technique there could possibly be? or could we just have voices mode and dissonance and tempo for one and be done with it?

I have a few questions about the study guide. On our vocab sheets is says Bleak-dreary and bleak-dark, gloomy. which one is right?? also.. do we have to memorize all four verses? also..will there be any thing else on the bible section on the test besides the stuff on the quiz u gave us? also.. u know how we have to say how we are like God in heart, strength, mind, soul ? how are we like him in that we love our neighbors? also..the oringinal of the species interpretation.. how we interpret it or what we decided as a class? i have more but i shall ask them 2morrow.

Well.... I've had some questions on reading comprehension since Ch. 3 (Book 2) and since I never have time to share them in class I thought I'd ask them now. Thnx if you answer them! (Sry if some of them sound dumb!!)

4. Why do Aragorn and Gandalf disagree about which way to cross the Misty Mountains?
- I know Aragorn doesn't want to go through Moria cause of what happened last time, is that it?
Ch. 4 (Journey in the Dark)
4. What is Moria and who lived there? Why did they live there?
-I know it's a mine way through the mountains and the dwarfs live there but idk bout the rest.
5. What happened to the people who used to live there?
- ?? They were attacked???
10. Who does Frodo hear following them? Where did he come from?
- I know it's Gollum, but where'd he come from?
Ch. 5 (The Bridge of Khazad-Dum)
1. Why did Balin come to Moria? How long did he successfully rule in Moria?
2. Who fought off the Cave Troll and how did they do it?
-??Boromir and Aragorn???
Ch. 6 (Lothlorien)
3. Describe how Lothlorien compares to Rivendell.
6. What clues are there to Aragorn having been here before?
-?? He looked at stuff w/ disappointment???
Ch. 7 (The Mirror of Galadriel)
4. What did they see? (I know Sam but idk bout Frodo)
- I know he saw a "white" version of Gandalf and ??What it'll be like if the mission fails???

Answers to Questions

Here we go on your questions. Quotes can be from anywhere: books, poems, song lyrics, the Bible. You can do a google search on quotes related to the various virtues.

We will practice the play tomorrow, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You do not have to have your costumes until Thursday's practice.

As far as length of your virtue examples that is up to you. Remember, you can use more than one page to tell your story example and provide your complimentary material. Please don't limit yourself by space. Take whatever space you need to express what you want to express. See you all tomorrow!

How long do the passages for the virtue project have to be??? Like 5-6 sentences??? Or like 3-4 inches tall??? But then you have different widths... So yea... PLZ HELP!!! (If your answer the question you can say _-_ sentences or _ inches tall by like _ inches wide) THANKS!!! sorry if I confused you!!!

Zoe, the key to your question is who did the disciples trust? Who asked them to give up everything to follow him? What did they know about him that would lead them to trust him when he asked them? Faith is about trusting someone you have come to know and in trusting them you start to become like them.

Play and Homework Update:

I was quite saddened to read your post Caroline about the challenge of working on your virtue project! It is certainly not my desire to burden you all. I will do my best to keep all other work to a minimum while you complete this project. I do hope you will be able to find joy and great personal pride as you express what is dear to you in your journals.

Thank you for a great day yesterday. Your pottery is amazing!!!! Some of you asked when we can get the fired pottery back. Last year it took 3 weeks because they have to schedule the kiln and then let the pottery bake for over a week! If it rains it will take longer to dry. We have an Open House on October 29th and they are trying to get it done by then if they can.

I will post the play parts and lines by Sunday morning. I had to come to Cambridge today to work on our computers with an IT expert. Good news! We now can get a signal in our classroom for the internet and the printer!!!!

As we move into the final two weeks of our unit here are the priorities:

1) Keep working on your Virtue Journals. Remember the goal is to express what is meaningful to you. We are not striving for perfection!!!

2) Keep up with the reading for Fellowship of the Ring. The good news is that the longest chapters are behind you. Now it is primarily tracking the journey from Caradhras to Moria to Lorien to the borders of Mordor! We will review chapters 4 to 6 on Monday, 7 on Tuesday, 8 on Thursday, and 9 on Friday. Do not worry if you don't get all the details. The goal is to catch the main points of the story line and see how the virtue of the characters enables them to fulfill Providence's design for them.

3) Start working on your lines and costumes once you get your parts tomorrow.

I love being on this quest with you to grasp the mystery of how God moves in people's lives to face the challenges of their day. Understanding Fellowship of the Ring and putting together your own journals is a quest! Well done! Know that there is nothing I would rather do than share this adventure with you! Mr. B

does anyone else feel like this virtue project is slowly taking over you life???? i mean i love it and all but i dont like to plan it out i prefer more to go with the flow so this whole turning in the stuff doesnt really do much but stress me out...... its sorta helps by making you think about what pages you need to put more thought into but i feel like i should be doing more pages instead of sitting hear writing down what im gonna do....... i wanted to get that out

Ok... for the project (virtue), what would is classifed as Artwork?? Like I made up some borders, with drawings, and I took the word faith and made a doodle for each letter... is that it.... n i have a few pictures of like chocolates and roses... idk if that's artwork??? chronological order question

hey everybody!!
on the chronological order sheet that Mr. B gave us it said that fatty bolger warns the citizens of Crickhollow about the arrival of dark riders before Tom saves the traveling group from barrow wights. But tom saves the group in chapter 8 and the dark riders come to crickhollow in chapter 11!! and it even says "while the hobbits were preparing for sleep" @ the prancing pony, dark riders came to crickhollow!! and thats in chapter 11 which is after 8!! maybe i wrote it down wrong, but I am confused.
i shall find out tomorrow!

Ok... I'm trying to find a quote for Pippin, it's from the movie though, (not part of the 7 required, doing 3 on this 1 page). But... I know the quote, it's when they had just met Aragorn, and they were walking and Pippin (think it was Pippin, if Merry please tell me) was unpacking the food, and Aragorn was like we just ate, and Pippin was like, "Breakfast yes, but it's time for tea (or something)." And Merry is like I don't think he knows about tea. And Pippin is like, "But he knows about lunch, supper, dinner, and elevensies, Merry he knows about elevensies right??" Does anyone know the exact wording. I'd look in the movie but I don't own it. I'm gonna look on youtube.... if you do please tell me!!

The Hobbits left the Shire when they entered the old forest and were rescued by Tom Bombadil. Once they left Tom they are headed out of the lands of the Hobbits. This is what makes Bree unique. They are now entering the realm of men. As far as Barliman how does he behave as the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony? How would you describe his character? Hope this helps!

Homework Update

I hope you all have recovered from RVR! My weekend has been even more challenging. Yesterday I got caught in the storm on a 65 mile bike ride. At times I couldn't see and then coming through Ruxton I had to ride through water up to my knees!! Ruxton Road and turned into a river. Then I got home to find my basement flooded!

As for homework, on Monday
1) your discussion questions through chapter 8 are due.
2) The plot outlines are to help you track the story and should be completed as you complete the discussion questions. I will not grade these though.
3) Your jeopardy questions are due. The "final jeopardy" big question is only one per group.
4) Your translation of Luke 10:27 is due.
5) Your virtue journal is ongoing as you have time.

This sounds like more than it is so please don't stress over it!

2) Help me decide what the color of quest is.

What is the name of Manwe's partner? Clue: she is the one Frodo cries out to when he is stabbed by the Witch King and when he is attacked by Shelob in the cave!

2. Fill in the plot outline for chapter four.
3. Write 10 sentences using vocabulary words from chapters 3 and 4.
